Harrisonburg Housing Agency Considers Smoking Ban

HARRISONBURG, Va. (AP) - The Harrisonburg Redevelopment and Housing Authority is considering banning smoking at all of its properties.

The proposal would prohibit smoking inside the agency's 249 units and outside each building.

The authority gave Executive Director Michael Wong and his staff permission to write the no-smoking policy last week.

Authority member Elroy Miller tells The Daily News Record (http://bit.ly/18fVaE1V ) that a no-smoking policy would reduce maintenance costs. He says it also would provide a more pleasant environment for people who have allergies and are bothered by secondhand smoke.

Last year, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and health advocates urged public housing authorities to adopt no-smoking policies.
