UMass Ends #7 UVa Field Hockey's Season in NCAA 1st Round

Massachusetts ended the #7 Virginia field hockey team's season Saturday as the 'Hoos fell 4-3 in overtime in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Virginia wraps up 2013 with a 15-6 record. UMass improves to 19-4 and will face Duke on Sunday in the second-round match-up.

In the second half, Umass scored with 1:08 remaining to tie the game at 3-3.

In overtime, Umass's Charlotte Verelst took a shot that was blocked by a UVa defender, but Verelst picked up the loose ball and found the upper right corner of the net to score 10:52 into the overtime period to ice UMass's 4-3 victory.

UVa senior Ellie Buckley logged her ACC-leading sixth defensive save in the first half and will finish her career with 11 defensive saves, ranking her fourth on the Virginia all-time list. Buckley also has 36 assists in her career, ranking her seventh on the UVa all-time list. In addition, Buckley is ranked fourth in the Virginia record book with 73 career goals and third with 182 career points.
