Students at the University of Virginia want you to take an extra second Friday and make sure your soda can makes it into the recycling bin.

Members of UVA's Sustainability Department celebrated America Recycles Day on the UVA lawn by building a mural out of university recycling bins. The mural spells “ARD,” for America Recycles Day.

Fourth-year UVA student Jon Torre says recycling is really a win-win for everyone.

"Recycling is really beneficial and when you think about it, it saves you money, it saves everyone else money, it saves the trees and the polar bears. There's really not much to lose from tossing a can in the recycling bin instead of the trash can,” said Torre.

The event also celebrates UVA’s progressive sustainability efforts. This year the university issued a recycling bin to each dormitory.
