Charlottesville City Schools Launch Recycling Challenge

Charlottesville, VA – Thursday, November 15, 2013 - Charlottesville City Schools announced the kickoff today of a new learning initiative, the Recycling Challenge. The project is led by the city’s high school students and supported by local recycling and waste hauler, Republic Services in partnership with TFC Recycling.

It is a hands-on, inter-disciplinary initiative that encourages students to take a scientific approach to waste and recycling collection by analyzing current habits, assessing education and awareness, and utilizing project-based learning. The goal of the initiative is to dramatically increase single-stream recycling rates and composting while encouraging students to become better stewards of the environment. The Challenge will run through the school year with the goal to expand into the middle and elementary schools in the spring 2014.

As part of the program, students will conduct a waste audit to determine the current recycling rate of the city high school as well as the contamination levels of the recycling and composting streams. Once students have analyzed this data, they will develop a plan to increase theirschool’s recycling rate and efficiency through education of their peers.

“We are excited to launch the Recycling Challenge initiative as part of the Charlottesville City Schools’ continued effort to reduce the environmental footprint throughout our school system. By increasing our recycling and composting and decreasing our impact on landfills, the students will have firsthand knowledge of the importance of being good stewards of the environment,” says Rosa Atkins, Superintendent of Charlottesville City Schools. “In addition, we are delighted to partner with the Republic Services and TFC Recycling on this project-based learning program.”

About Republic Services

Republic Services of Charlottesville offers the only single-stream recycling program in the area. This allows their customers to place all of their recyclables into one bin. All food and nonrecyclable items simply go into a separate bin. This process ensures that recyclables are not contaminated by household waste. Republic Services is committed to educating the public on this process and ensures that 96% of your recyclables are recycled. For individuals and our community at large, this means taking the opportunity to reduce, reuse and recycle. Republic Services provides commercial, industrial, and residential recycling and waste collection services throughout Central Virginia.
