An NBA Hall-of-Famer was in Charlottesville Thursday night for Slam Dunk for Diabetes.
Dominique Wilkins learned he had type 2 diabetes shortly after his NBA career ended. Now he tours the country encouraging others to manage their diabetes like he's learned to manage his. Thursday, he was at the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library.
"It's the things that you didn't do to ensure that you lived healthy, and it's the way we ate,” Wilkins said. “So when I think about it that's the thing that really got me to this point where I'm a diabetic, but at the same time, it wasn't something that was going to slow me down."
Wilkins says it's important to base your diet around lean protein and green vegetables to avoid diabetes. He also says it's critical to stay active.
