Albemarle Online System to Aid in Fraud Protection

Posted: Updated:

Albemarle County Circuit Court is helping people fight scams and identity fraud with a new online program.

Albemarle County Circuit Court Clerk Debra M. Shipp says this is another safeguard to help protect you and your property. Here's how it works: the program called Cott Systems Property Check allows Albemarle County landowners to check their property by logging into the system through the Internet.

Property owners can also sign up to receive automatic alerts through text or email message if someone takes a mortgage out on the land or put some other restraint on it.

“You never know, you can never be too safe there are people out there that are always trying to commit fraud against other people,” said Shipp.

The system went live in October. Before then, you had to show up in person at the clerk's office if you wanted to check your property.

The system won't stop scam artists before they act but can alert you in time to get law enforcement involved at the initial stage of fraud.
