As the weather gets colder, many people have to budget between heating their homes and providing food for their families. Now, others can help make that decision a little easier.
The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank is kicking off its holiday food drive Thursday at the Rio Hill Kroger in Albemarle County. The food bank supports 26,000 people in the Charlottesville area alone, and many are children.
"We need canned vegetables, beans, rice, pasta, pasta sauce, preferably plastic, no glass containers, keeping in mind that four in 10 of the people we serve are children, so child-friendly foods, even macaroni and cheese, are really appreciated,” said Michael McKee, the food bank’s CEO.
This year, Kroger is making it even easier to donate. For $10.99, you can buy a box the store will fill with items for the food bank.
