A Charlottesville officer is being recognized for going above and beyond to protect his community.

Detective Joey Lewis was named law enforcement officer of the year by the American Legion. Lewis earned praise from the legion and his fellow officers for arresting a man last year who assaulted a University of Virginia student.

Lewis says he is honored to receive the award from men who defended the country.

"All the veterans here, without their service and sacrifice none of what I do or anybody else in America does would be possible anyways, so it really means a lot coming from the American Legion of Charlottesville,” he said.

Charlottesville police Chief Tim Longo says Lewis is an example for his other officers to look up to.

Lewis will now be eligible to receive recognition on the state level.
