A University of Virginia student is being honored for his award-winning sneakers. Oliver Vranesh is the winner of Complex Magazine's "Next Sneaker Design Star" contest.
Vranesh's award-winning shoe design sent him to Reebok headquarters in Boston for a week. During an apprenticeship, he had the chance to learn how to adjust his design to fit the Reebok brand.
"It's kind of like a vintage basketball shoe with modern technology,” said Vranesh.
He says he designed the shoe just days before the contest deadline - but Vranesh isn't new to product design. Before coming to UVA to complete his master's of architecture, he graduated from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn where he studied industrial design.
"Whether you're in graphic design or product design or architecture, you try to design something that everyone would enjoy or respect, so that's what I was trying to do,” said Vranesh.
Complex Magazine selected the three finalists for the contest - Vranesh being one of them - then, thanks to online votes, he finally won the contest.
"I wanted to design something that was fashionable, functionable, something that I would wear everyday,” said Vranesh.
Vranesh has decided not to develop a prototype of the shoe, yet. He says he wants to put all of his energy into finishing his master’s degree at UVA but would like to prototype the shoe later down the road.
