Hurt Visits Elementary School to Recognize Blue Ribbon Status

Posted: Updated:
ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va (WVIR) - Students at Meriwether Lewis Elementary School in Albemarle County are moving and shaking their way to National Blue Ribbon School status. Fifth District Congressman Robert Hurt delivered a certificate Tuesday to recognize the school's Blue Ribbon achievement.

According to the National Blue Ribbon Schools program's official website, the program recognizes "public and private elementary, middle, and high schools where students perform at very high levels or where significant improvements are being made in students' academic achievement.

Meriwether Lewis credits its "Meriwether Movers" program for helping the school earn the recognition. Each morning begins with a different dance routine choreographed by students.

“Just a fun way every day for kids to start off their day and get a little movement in the classroom, get the blood flowing, get the oxygen to the brain. So, they're going to be better behaved. They're going to be better learners and prepared for the day,” said Scott Williams, Meriwether Lewis Elementary School physical education teacher.

The activity is part of the school's "sound bodies, sound minds" approach to learning.
