Greene's Vietnam War Museum Holds Dedication to Honor Veterans

Posted: Updated:

The Vietnam War Foundation based in Greene County dedicated new bricks on a memorial walkway Sunday afternoon as part of its fourth annual Veterans Day weekend open house. The ceremony honored those who have served and sacrificed for our nation's freedom.

Behind each engraved brick at the Vietnam War Museum in Ruckersville is the story of a soldier.

"We're here to honor my dad who passed away before I was born," said Linda Fields, who attended the memorial brick dedication ceremony.  "He died in August and I was born in November."

The bricks are symbols of the life and legacy they left to serve our country on the front lines.

Fields said, "It means a lot to me because I've never been to anything that honored my dad."

Bricks for eight members of the Fields family were dedicated at Sunday's ceremony, along with 28 for deceased members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2044 in Earlysville.

VFW Post 2044 Commander William Keish said, "We want the continuity to continue.  The veterans, as you can imagine, are getting older.  We do have younger veterans and we need those veterans to be inclusive within the veteran's organization so they can in turn give back to the community."

Veterans who volunteer for the Vietnam War Foundation say ceremonies like Sunday's give them a chance to reflect on the brotherhood that forever binds them together.

"A lot of folks here do remember those people and we all remember our comrades - whether we knew them or not - we're of kindred spirits and we all loved our country," Vietnam War Museum volunteer Bruce Eades said.

It's a dedication to our nation meant to be commemorated by generations to come.

Fields said, "This has a special meaning to our family and we will be purchasing a brick for our brother who served in Vietnam on the carrier in the Navy."

The money from the bricks goes directly to maintaining the Vietnam War Museum.  The Veterans Day weekend open house will continue Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
