Fairfax County Canvassing Absentee Ballots

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Fairfax County Electoral Board says it is looking into problems with a broken optical scanner for the cause of a discrepancy in the number of ballots cast in Tuesday's election.

The board began a canvass of the missing votes Friday. In a news release, the board said it would release the findings of its investigation on Saturday and the results of the canvass on Sunday.

The absence of nearly 2,000 absentee ballots in one of the county's districts could be critical in the razor- thin race for attorney general.

Republican Sen. Mark D. Obenshain holds less than a one percent edge over Democratic Sen. Mark Herring. Some 2.2 million votes were cast in the race.
