Associate Dean at UVA Faces Child Porn Charges

Posted: Updated:
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va (WVIR) -

An associate dean and professor at the University of Virginia is behind bars. Michael Morris is at the center of a child pornography investigation. Morris is facing at least one count of distribution of, or receiving, child pornography.

According to court documents, Morris’ illicit internet activity dates back to 2012. Court documents say Morris logged into a child porn site 192 times from his home on Bargamin Loop in Crozet between January 3 of this year and October 28. The documents also allege he accessed a child porn sharing site at least once using his UVA email address.

The FBI raided Morris' home in Crozet Wednesday, and now neighbors are reacting. The FBI raid took place Wednesday morning, and by that same afternoon Morris was in front of a judge in federal court.

The allegations have Morris' neighbors stunned. “It's a shock. It's really just a shock,” said Felisa Needham, a neighbor.

Neighbors say FBI agents arrested Morris Wednesday morning and searched his house until about noon. "A gentleman was carrying big white boxes and I thought perhaps they were files or something - and a suitcase,” said Alice Dornemann, a neighbor.

Neighbors say it was an unlikely scene for what they call an ideal place to raise children. "We didn't have any problems until that occurred and that was upsetting because it's a very nice community,” said Dornemann.

Thursday, we knocked on Morris' door, but no one wanted to comment on the allegations.

Neighbors with small children say this has been an eye opener. "It makes me cautious and it makes me just wonder what else is there about our neighbors that we don't know about,” said Needham.

UVA spokesperson McGregor McCance says the university is cooperating with the investigation and that Morris has been suspended from his job pending completion of the investigation.

Morris is being held without bond and will be back in Charlottesville Federal Court for a counsel status hearing on November 14. He has a preliminary hearing scheduled for November 18 in Harrisonburg.
