Crozet Elementary School is going to have to wait for new sidewalks.
Bids for the project were more than 10 percent higher than the county estimate, and the county was required to reject the offers. Now they're working with the two lowest bidding companies to find a way to make the work more affordable.
Albemarle County transportation engineer Jack Kelsey said, "It’s not an easy thing to get a handle on, exactly what that cost is, but in the end it's essentially our best opinion of what the cost will be."
School officials say they're disappointed as they were expecting the new sidewalks by next spring.
"This is a bit of a disappointment for the school community. The project has been on the board for several years, going back four or five years, so the community is really anxious to be able to get these sidewalks in," said Phil Giarmita of Albemarle County Schools.
Kelsey says he hopes to schedule a re-bid on the construction before the end of the year.
