Albemarle Fire & Rescue Offers Heating Safety Tips

Posted: Updated:

As it starts to get colder outside, there are a few heating safety tips Albemarle County fire marshals want you to keep in mind.

They recommend that every furnace be inspected and the chimney cleaned if the home has one. It is a good practice to keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment - like a fireplace or space heater.

Albemarle County's Assistant Fire Marshal Shawn Maddox says now is a good time to re-evaluate how heat is used in your home.

“Just make sure that however you heat is safe - be it kerosene or propane or wood or pellet stove. Whatever it is that you use. Just make sure that you look it over and make sure that it's in normal operating condition,” said Maddox.

Albemarle County Fire & Rescue says there is a big spike in heating-related calls between December and February.
