UVa Women's Basketball Tips Off 2013 Season in a Week
The college basketball season starts one week from today. The Wahoo women will open up with a game at James Madison.
The Cavaliers will get a boost from the return of Lexie Gerson, whose been a member of the ACC all-defensive team. Gerson missed all of last season with a hip injury.
The team returns its leading scorer from last season, Ataira Franklin, who has been voted preseason all-ACC.
The Cavaliers have been picked to finish 8th in the ACC.
The 'Hoos will have more depth this year and although they don't have much height outside of Sarah Imovbioh, they've got lots of athleticism.
"In the past two years, rebounding is something we've struggled with," said UVa senior forward Ataira Franklin. "We've had Simone and Telia down there, so as guards we're definitely going to have to pick up some of the slack down there. We can't rely on Sarah to get all the boards."
UVa Head Coach Joanne Boyle is starting her third season with the 'Hoos. Boyle said, "I feel we're better in practice than we were in games at this time last year with understanding the importance of that, and they've really work hard. They see that we don't have the size out there, but we have more athleticism, so it seems like we're on the boards more."
