Waynesboro drivers and businesses are celebrating the early reopening of the Broad Street Bridge, which has been closed since February. The $3.3 million construction project is now complete, so the detours through Main Street are no longer necessary.
Business owners in the area say they're very happy to see the finished product: refurbished piers, a fresh sidewalk on one side, and some decorative concrete detailing, and under-lighting. There are now lights underneath the bridge that reflect off the south river after sunset for an urban glow.
"It was a nice project. The contractor did an outstanding job. Came in pretty close to budget and under time,” said project manager Neal Conyers.
The bridge’s structural foundation is now sturdier and the railing is also new.
The bridge officially reopened to drivers Thursday at noon.
