Race for VA Attorney General Offers Stark Choice

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The race between two state senators for Virginia attorney general offers voters a stark choice.

Republican Mark Obenshain of Harrisonburg has a long record as a soldier in the conservative culture wars. Democrat Mark Herring of Loudoun County has been a loyal member of the Senate minority, arguing for abortion rights and tighter gun regulations.

Herring says Obenshain would push the same kind of "divisive social agenda" as outgoing Republican Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, who is running for governor.

Obenshain has said little about hot-button social issues like abortion and gay rights, focusing instead on public safety issues like protecting the public from child predators and sex traffickers.

The election is Tuesday.
