Now that holiday shopping can officially get underway, there's an event highlighting gifts made in the area, and it benefits people here at home as well.

Women In Spiritual Endeavors or "WISE" is a new Charlottesville group aiming to help disadvantaged women and children in the community. They are hosting a holiday fair this weekend with proceeds going to their first scholarship fund.

The fair will feature 30 vendors selling crafts, holiday gifts, handbags and jewelry, all of them handmade by people in the region. There will also be food, drinks and door prizes.

WISE will then donate the money raised toward the tuition for a woman, particularly a single mother in need, to attend Piedmont Virginia Community College.

"We're just picking different things that we think that we can help people with. It is a new organization and we've got a lot of wonderful women connected to it and working hard in it," artist Carolyn Belt said.

WISE hopes to raise $3,000-$4,000 at this weekend's event. It takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Jefferson Area Board for Aging offices on Hillsdale Drive.
