Albemarle Football Aims for Jefferson District Title
In 2012, the Albemarle Football team was 1-9, forcing most of their competition in the Jefferson District to overlook their talent.
Albemarle running back, Dominique Talley said, "it bothers us but we don't really care about the spotlight, we just want the respect."
The Patriots didn't only earn respect last week after taking down Monticello, they are now tied for first place in the Jefferson District. Cornerback Kevin Bernardino said, "No one is expecting anything from us and we're just going out there and proving the doubters wrong." Albemarle's quarterback DG Archer added, "We're just playing together as a team. The coaches always have a good game plan for us and we just try to work together and do the best we can."
This group of underdogs are 5-3 overall this year. This Friday they have a chance to destroy Louisa's shot at getting into the playoffs. Coach Zach Vrhovac is making sure they keep their eye on the prize buy rocking the Lions gear at practice.
"Every week he gives us some motivation to keep us working hard in practice," said Talley. "He's been wearing it since Monday because he wants us to emphasize that this game is a win or go home situation." Bernardino added, "I mean we want to win this game it's our senior night so we don't want him wearing other schools stuff."
The Patriots are aiming to have a home playoff game in 2013, but to be able to bring home a Jefferson District title would be icing on the cake.
Talley said, "we see it as every week, if we go out as a team and play with intensity and heart that's what's gonna win us every single game and I think that's what we have." Bernardino added, "we're a group of brothers and we worked our butts off for the past year and when it gets to game day we're refusing to lose."
