UVa Men's Soccer Beats UNCG in OT; Extends Unbeaten Streak to 11 Games
UVa freshman Riggs Lennon scored the golden goal in overtime to help the 11th ranked UVa men's soccer team beat UNC-Greensboro 2-1.
It was Virginia's final non-conference game of the year. With the win Virginia improves to 8-3-4 on the season.
"I'm pleased to get a result tonight," Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. "Saturday's game (at Notre Dame) took a lot out of us, so I knew it would be a tough game for us. I thought when we had the first goal it would be enough to win and we could turn the page and get ready for Friday(against North Carolina). We let them score on the restart and it made things a little trickier for us. But to our credit, we have been in a lot of these overtime games before and right from the first whistle in overtime, I felt like we were going to win. We started passing and moving and had fresh bodies in there. Sure enough, we were able to pull out the win."
Riggs Lennon had a goal called back in the second half with the game tied at 1 when the officials ruled that Lennon was off-sides. But Lennon eventually scored the game winner in OT.
Lennon said "I thought I had one, they didn't give it to me. We wanted to come out in overtime and score early because we have a big game Friday. Darius came up to me and said we're going to get another one, I knew I just had to keep working and I was going to get another chance at it and I got one in overtime and it went in.
Virginia plays host to #23 North Carolina Friday at 7pm.
