Madison County students and staff are coming together to mourn the loss of a seventh-grade student killed in an accidental shooting. The Daily Progress reports 12-year-old Dax Dixon died Saturday night following a shooting that involved another juvenile in the Pratts section of Madison County.
Monday, students could visit a counseling center set up at William Wetsel Middle School as they grieve their fellow Mountaineer. Counselors met with students in the middle school cafeteria and several classrooms to help them cope with the death of their classmate and friend.
Nicholas Curtis, a psychologist with Madison County Public Schools, says they enacted their crisis plan, which includes the counseling center. The loss comes on the heels of an accident that killed a Madison High School senior earlier this month.
"Anytime you have the death of a student or any crisis like that, it's going to be hard." Curtis stated. "Going through this more than once in a short period of time is that much harder, of course, but both times being a small community, everyone has come together and helped each other."
Neighboring school divisions and surrounding agencies have offered resources to help Madison County through this difficult time.
The Madison County Sheriff's Office is investigating the accidental shooting. No further information has been released.
