Cville High School ESL Students, Mentors Take on Ropes Course

Posted: Updated:

Charlottesville High School students hit a ropes course in Albemarle County Friday for a peer mentor program. Some of the trust building exercises included a balance platform and a water wheel.

The entire day was designed to break the ice between English as a Second Language (ESL) students and their peer mentors.

"Even at the beginning they're hesitant, they're quiet, they didn't know each other's names. By the end they're cheering each other on," said Tina Vasquez, teacher at CHS.

The school hopes that the relationships formed Friday will not only jump-start useful homework sessions -  but also friendships. The once-a-week tutoring sessions last through the year.
