FDA Warns Pet Owners of Jerky Treat-Induced Illness

Posted: Updated:

A recent release from the Food and Drug Administration has some pet owners worried about feeding jerky treats to their furry friends. According to the report, 3,600 dogs and 10 cats have become ill from eating them.

Doctor John Andersen of Albemarle County's Monticello Animal Hospital says he does not know of any definite cases at his office, but the problem is hard to pinpoint.

"I can think of a couple cases where I feel like the animals were sick after eating some treats, I don't really know if they were jerky treats in particular, but it's tough because dogs are very indiscriminate," said Andersen.

Andersen says he recommends people not purchase any food products for your pet from China. Most of the contaminated jerky products being investigated by the FDA come are produced there.
