Police Prepare for Clinton Event in Charlottesville

Posted: Updated:

Charlottesville is once again playing host to a political bigwig, and with that comes the logistics of providing security. Former President Bill Clinton is coming to the Paramount Theater next Wednesday to campaign for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe.

In addition to Clinton's security detail, Charlottesville and Albemarle County police will pitch in with personnel.

A steady stream of people scored free tickets to the event at Charlottesville's Democratic Headquarters Thursday.

"I think he's a brilliant speaker. I've seen him speak so many times now since then on TV, it will be great to see him live," said Karen Riddle, who got a ticket to the event.

Riddle is one of hundreds of people that have already secured a ticket to the event – and she isn't the only one gearing up. Area police are putting security plans in place.

Charlottesville and Albemarle police say they will be working with the Secret Service and federal agents to provide any extra security needed.

"You may see an increase in uniform presence, as well as some of our police motors being involved in any type of visit, dignitary visit," said Lt. Ronnie Roberts of the Charlottesville Police Department.

Police say they don't expect Clinton's visit to impact traffic the way President Obama's visit did in 2012. They do not know if he is flying in or traveling by car.

Carter Johnson, spokesperson for the Albemarle County Police Department, says she does not think a motorcade will cause many - if any - road closures.

"Officers will be at different points to make sure the traffic is stopped there. In this case we probably wouldn't have all those road closures, but when the president visits we do," said Johnson.

Johnson says the department does not have a cost estimate if extra security is needed.

"It depends on how many officers, we might be able to do it just with our on-duty officers and it could require some extra resources," said Johnson.

Clinton will join McAuliffe at the Paramount Theater at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, October 30. There are still tickets available to the event. The Charlottesville's Democratic Headquarters is located at 913 West Main Street and the office will be open until 9 p.m.
