Middle School Parade Raises Energy Preservation Awareness
Henley Middle School students on the downtown mall
Charlottesville's downtown mall got a little more "green" Thursday morning. Students from Henley Middle Schools dressed up in costumes and paraded down the mall to bring awareness to environmentally friendly practices in the home.
It is the culmination of a project the students worked on for months. This is the first year the school is teaching through projects, and teachers say it is working better than expected.
"This is hugely successful. The enthusiasm that the kids have shown today and the three weeks of preparing, they have been so invested in the learning and just kind of taking the learning process on their own, instead of the usual us giving them the information," said Leslie Tanner, sixth grade science teacher at Henley.
The students are coming back out Friday to take over the downtown mall again and maybe teach the community a little something about energy preservation.
