Harrisonburg Begins Annual Leaf Collection

City of Harrisonburg Press Release 

Harrisonburg, VA – The Department of Public Works will soon begin the annual curbside leaf collection throughout Harrisonburg.

The collection will begin Monday, November 4 and weather permitting will continue for six weeks.

Collection Schedule:

West Side of Main Street and Forest Hills Road

November 4-8

November 18-22

December 2-6

East Side of Main Street and Fairway Drive

November 11-15 (excluding holidays)

November 25-29 (excluding holidays)

December 9-13

The leaf collection truck will make its way through the neighborhood streets once per week during the designated dates.

Guidelines for collection:

  • Citizens are asked to rake their leaves out to the curb or the edge of the roadway.
  • Leaves will not be picked up if there is excessive grass, limbs, branches, trash, etc. mixed with the leaves. No exceptions.
  • Leaves need to be raked to the back of the curb, not to extend more than five feet into your yard.
  • Please do not rake the leaves into the street.
  • Please do not park vehicles around leaves.

Residents in need of leaf collection before and/or after these dates are asked to place leaves in a biodegradable bag or 35 gallon container without a liner for your assigned Wednesday yard debris and bulk collection.

During the 2012 leaf collection, more than 715 tons of leaves were collected throughout neighborhoods in the city.
