Staunton Afterschool Program Reaches One Year Mark

Posted: Updated:

The Central Shenandoah Valley Office on Youth started "Wonderful Wednesdays," an afterschool program for kids in Staunton, one year ago and this Wednesday the office celebrated its success.

The children of Ferriar Court and Willow View Apartments enjoyed the anniversary with fun, food and festivities. According to program leaders, Wonderful Wednesdays are a way for kids to have fun while connecting, and that community involvement is key.

"We look for churches, partnerships in other agencies for the sustainability of the program, to kind of take up the program and continue it. It's part of the sustainability to be there for the kids, to build relationships, to be that positive adult role model," said Amber Ham, program coordinator for the Central Shenandoah Valley Office on Youth.

The Blue Ridge Church of Christ has taken over Wonderful Wednesdays now, but the Office on Youth still needs help in Stuarts Draft and Waynesboro with the program there, called Marvelous Mondays.
