The city of Waynesboro has officially called off this year's Trick-or-Treat Trail through downtown shops. City planners say the ongoing streetscape project has made it unsafe.
As crews continue working on improving the sidewalks, curbs and overall look of the downtown - one trade-off is that the traditional block party on Main Street is now canceled.
Waynesboro Downtown Development Inc. released a statement Wednesday saying they want everyone to be safe, and it's just not in the right condition to receive the hundreds of trick-or-treaters that come through each year.
Some business owners are looking into whether they could still hand out candy to kids away from all the construction. One concern from merchants about canceling the event was that people would show up anyway because it is an annual event.
We have not been able to reach Waynesboro City Manager Mike Hamp for a comment, so there's no word on how the city would handle those possible visitors.
