Crews in Charlottesville began work on new utility lines Monday on West Main Street to accommodate a new seven-story hotel.
One lane will be closed to traffic for the next two weeks at the intersection of West Main and Ridge streets.
Charlottesville's assistant traffic engineer, Jared Buchanan, says the city has plans to scale back hours of construction if traffic becomes a problem, and that it does not want this to have an adverse effect on businesses in the area.
"The impacts are for just a couple of weeks and we're having them wrap up by holiday season so that any shops won't feel that impact in their holiday season shopping," Buchanan said.
After the West Main construction is complete, which is expected to be before Thanksgiving, a second phase of construction will begin on Ridge Street.
