Hotel Construction Begins on West Main

Posted: Updated:

Crews in Charlottesville began work on new utility lines Monday on West Main Street to accommodate a new seven-story hotel.

One lane will be closed to traffic for the next two weeks at the intersection of West Main and Ridge streets.

Charlottesville's assistant traffic engineer, Jared Buchanan, says the city has plans to scale back hours of construction if traffic becomes a problem, and that it does not want this to have an adverse effect on businesses in the area.

"The impacts are for just a couple of weeks and we're having them wrap up by holiday season so that any shops won't feel that impact in their holiday season shopping," Buchanan said.

After the West Main construction is complete, which is expected to be before Thanksgiving, a second phase of construction will begin on Ridge Street.

City of Charlottesville Press Release

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - Beginning October 21, the inside left turn lane for traffic turning from eastbound West Main Street onto northbound Ridge Street will be closed for several days. The closure will then shift to the westbound lane of West Main Street. The entire closure is expected to last two weeks. All traffic movement will be maintained for the duration of the closure.

On a Sunday following the completion of the West Main Street work, the intersection of West Main Street and Ridge Street will be closed for an entire day. Some traffic movements may be restricted during this time.
