VA Women's Institute for Leadership Undergoes Change of Command

Posted: Updated:

Thursday marks the end of an era for America's only all-female cadet corps.

The Virginia Women's Institute for Leadership at Mary Baldwin in Staunton conducted a change of command parade and ceremony Thursday. The cadets marched through campus in honor of their leader for the program's entire 18-year history, General N. Michael Bissell.

"This has been my last assignment and I've had some great assignments, but this one is phenomenal just because what I've done and seen with these young ladies and developed...you know, we're the only all-female cadet corps in the world, which makes it kind of special," Bissell said.

General Bissell has a highly distinguished military career. He served in two tours in Vietnam as a combat helicopter pilot.
