VA Foresters Urge Caution During Fall Fire Season

Posted: Updated:

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - State foresters are reminding Virginians the fall fire season has begun, meaning there is an increased threat of wildfires.

The Virginia Department of Forestry said the fire season began this week. That means residents should be especially careful of unattended campfires and the burning of debris or trash.

Each year, the state sees more than 1,200 wildfires that scorch more than 10,000 acres. The department says 95 percent of wildfires in Virginia are the result of human activity.
