Staunton Race Relations Talk Turns to Education

Posted: Updated:

Shelburne Middle School was open after hours Tuesday night with the people of Staunton talking about education.

This was the second discussion in an ongoing conversation about race relations in Staunton, but the focus had little to do with race and more about educational opportunities for children.

The question on the table: how can parents, schools and churches help kids identify and achieve their educational goals?

"People need to know that there's so many avenues and opportunities that are out there where you can do something that you want to do and immediately make, and not spend $60,000 going back and getting multiple degrees and training to get a job," said Carla Van Devander, who works for Staunton City Schools.

The crowd talked a lot about stigmas associated with Valley Vocational Technical Center and the governor's school.
