Historic Black Newspapers Donated to Library of VA
STAUNTON, Va. (AP) - The Augusta County Genealogical Society is donating five African-American newspaper issues published between 1916 and 1931 to the Library of Virginia.
The society bought the issues of The Staunton Tribune and the Staunton Recorder from Jennifer Vickers of Staunton. The News Leader (http://bit.ly/19Eis4m ) reports that the issues will be donated Wednesday.
The director of the Library of Virginia's Virginia Newspaper Project, Errol Somay, says copies of African-American newspapers are rare.
Somay says the library most likely will microfilm and digitize the newspapers. Digitizing them will enable the library to make the newspapers available online.
