A central Virginia food pantry has reached a major milestone. The Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry announced Friday it has distributed more than 1.1 million pounds of food over the past four quarters.
The nonprofit expanded its service last month, adding another day to its weekly food distribution. Executive Director Margaret Burruss says the pantry passes this milestone with mixed emotions.
"On the one hand, it shows great dedication of volunteers and generosity of supporters and area partners, but on the other hand, it's an indication of the need we have in our community," she said.
Statistics show Loaves and Fishes had a 37 percent increase in the number of people served so far this year compared to this same time last year.
