The sidewalk next to Stuarts Draft High School is almost done, but now supervisors are talking about extending it into a nearby neighborhood.
The Augusta County Board of Supervisors held a public hearing Wednesday night about applying for a grant to put sidewalks in the Augusta Farms subdivision.
Supervisor David Karaffa says it's a safety issue. He says newer subdivisions come with sidewalks.
"This subdivision off Augusta Farms Road just didn't have them for the type of homes that were being sold. They're smaller houses on smaller lots, and this is a great opportunity. And for the state to come in and say, ‘yeah we value safety as well' I think this is great," Karaffa said.
The grant money could mean the Virginia Department of Transportation would pay 80 percent of the project, leaving the county with a $260,000 bill.
Supervisors will vote on the issue at the next meeting.
