Albemarle County Public Schools Press Release
(ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Virginia) – Beginning this Thursday evening, October 10, Albemarle County residents will be able to virtually attend all business meetings of the county's school board. Business meetings are held the second Thursday of each month in Lane Auditorium at the McIntire Road county office building, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Through the school division's home page at www.k12albemarle.org, web page viewers can link to a live audio feed of the meeting. The audio from all business meetings will be archived on the division's website within 48 business hours and will be categorized by topic for future reference.
"As a board, we place a high value on public involvement in our decision-making process," said Board Chairman Steve Koleszar. "It's our hope that by adding real-time audio capabilities to our community outreach, more people will have the opportunity to learn about their school division and increase their engagement with the education of our children," he added.
Among the agenda items for this Thursday's board meeting is a discussion on changes to the division's High School Program of Studies for the 2014-15 school year. School officials have been considering whether to recommend doing away with the academic class ranking of high school students. Research shows that fewer colleges and universities are placing a heavy emphasis on class rank when reviewing applications for admission. In recent years, several school divisions in Virginia have discontinued reporting a student's academic class ranking.
Other agenda items for Thursday include the annual "State of the Division" report; approval of a resolution to consider alternative assessment measures of student performance in addition to Standards of Learning (SOL) tests; a program update on the Safe Schools/Healthy Students grant; a presentation on Brownsville Elementary School's performance improvement plan; information on the upcoming Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) state legislative priorities; and early thoughts on special priorities for the 2014-15 school budget.
School board meeting agendas are posted online at http://esb.k12albemarle.org/ by the end of the business day on the Friday before the meeting, and presentations generally are available online the day before a meeting. In addition to the business meeting, the Board conducts a working session every fourth Thursday of the month with the exception of November and December.
