Virginia Fall Fire Season Begins October 15

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia foresters are asking residents to use caution when burning outdoors during the state's fall wildfire season.

The season begins Oct. 15 and continues through Nov. 30.

The Virginia Department of Forestry says conditions are ripe for wildfires as leaves dry out and fall from trees, humidity levels drop, grasses turn brown and winds increase.

Officials say Virginia experiences more than 1,200 wildfires that burn more than 10,000 acres of land each year.

Director of resource protection John Miller says because most wildfires are due to human activity, taking even the simplest precautions will significantly reduce the occurrence of wildfires and the threat to residents.
