New water systems are no longer coming to Zion Crossroads, at least not in the near future.
The Fluvanna County Board of Supervisors has ended negotiations with the water and sewer company Aqua Virginia, so other options will now be considered.
Supervisor Mozell Booker said negotiations ended based on legal problems with Aqua's proposal. She says things ended on positive terms, and they may still work together in the future.
At this point, the Board of Supervisors has several more options to consider. At its next meeting, supervisors are expected to discuss a plan to run water from the Mechunk Creek area to Zion Crossroads. To do this, the board would need approval from the Department of Corrections, as part of the land is owned by the prison.
Booker says ending negotiations with Aqua Virginia make that decision all the more important. This would only be a short-term solution for the need of water at Zion Crossroads, as it would not provide a significant increase, but it's a start.
More future plans include a line that would run from the James River around the Columbia area up just over the border into Louisa County at Fork Creek, and then eventually west to Zion Crossroads. This option would depend on the construction of a new treatment plant at Fork Creek, which Booker says is in the works.
The water intake on the James River right now is owned by both Fluvanna and Louisa, but Fluvanna County has talked about moving it closer to Columbia as a first step. This would make construction of the future water line easier, but would require the approval of Louisa.
There are a multitude of options to be considered, but supervisors want to make it clear they are serious about getting water to Zion Crossroads and the 250 corridor.
