A Greene County deputy sheriff is locked up Wednesday. Sergeant Robert Beverage, 56, was arrested on two counts of soliciting a minor online.

Beverage worked at the Greene County Sheriff's Office for almost 25 years - until he was fired Wednesday. Virginia State Police went to the Sheriff's Office to interview Beverage, then arrested him.

Sheriff Steve Smith said he received a complaint about two weeks ago about Beverage. He said after checking into the complaint he found credible evidence to turn it over to the Virginia State Police.

Smith says there is only one confirmed victim so far, but the investigation is still ongoing. Smith says this is a situation that is hard on the entire Sheriff's Office.

"Men and women who work here, the deputies and all, they have to have the public's trust and I will do everything in my power to assure that that happens. We will always do the right thing. Sometimes it hurts your own but you have to do the right thing," said Smith.

The Greene County Sheriff's Office is cooperating with the Virginia State Police as this investigation continues. If you have any information on the case, call the Virginia State Police.
