UVa Men's Soccer Upsets #10 VCU in Double OT Thriller 2-1
The UVa Men's soccer team took down #10 VCU in a double overtime thriller Tuesday night as Eric Bird scored the golden goal in the 108th minute to give the 'Hoos 2-1 over the Rams.
UVa's Matt Brown sent a ball up to Bird in the box who fired to far post to score the golden goal.
"Matt Brown went up to challenge for it and it kind of squirted around he got that final toe up to me and put it on a platter," said Bird. He added,"I just side footed it home in the back. You're doing whatever you can. You run out here for 110 minutes and you don't wanna give up that final goal. It's the golden goal"
Head coach, George Gelnovatch said, "they just kept going. The guys didn't have their greatest night tonight. I had to make a bunch of different subs that I don't normally do just to get us through it and everybody just stayed together. I can't tell you how proud I am of these guys."
Virginia's other goal was scored by Darius Madison in the 19th minute to give Virginia a 1-0 lead.
Virginia hosts Pittsburgh Friday at Klockner stadium at 7 p.m.
