Martha Jefferson Monday: What Does Stress do to Your Body?

Posted: Updated:

We've all had those days…there's too much to do, and not enough time. Or, we've faced a situation that we weren't expecting. All of the sudden it hits - you're stressed.

Dr. Andy Hawkins works at Spring Creek Family Medicine. He notes that a little bit of stress can't be escaped. "There is a certain amount of stress that you deal with physiologically, and that's OK and we almost expect for you to have that," he noted.

But if it goes too far, it can take a toll on your health. "There end up being so many behavioral factors that come into play," he stated. "When you're stressed you don't eat well, maybe you smoke, maybe you don't exercise and you normally would."

In addition to causing changes in behavior, in some situations stress can lead to depression, or psychiatric disorders. Often times stress also causes changes in your immune system.

When it comes to treatment options, Dr. Hawkins says getting at the root of the stress that's causing problems is always best. He also recommends people find their outlet for stress reduction, and spend time unwinding, doing the things they enjoy.  "Everyone is different. For some people it might be painting, for others it's yoga or exercise. It's really whatever works for you in terms of controlling that stress is the most important thing."
