Martha Jefferson Monday: What Type of Flexible Schedules are Offered for Nurses?

Posted: Updated:

If you are a nurse and work in a hospital, you know that care is nonstop, patients need help around the clock.

"Being a hospital, we're open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so we have a variety of staffing needs," said Becky Owen, RN, director of nursing at Martha Jefferson. "Our goal is to be flexible with our nursing staff and offer the best possible care to our patients."

Whether it's during the day, at night or on weekends, four, eight and 12-hour shifts are all different options provided to nurses. Although the schedules might seem strange, they ensure patients can always be cared for, and the unusual setup can also benefit nurses.

"Needs around schedules for personal reasons are very different than they use to be and we want to be flexible to be able to meet that," commented Owen.

Now, a brand new position called a seasonal float nurse position is being offered at Martha Jefferson Hospital. People in the position work part-time, November through April. Typically – the winter and early spring months are the busiest time for hospitals.

"During the winter you have flu, you have respiratory illnesses and you have more surgeries," noted Owen.

The position offers parents a convenient option for being able to work, but have summers off. It's just one more way shift-work is working to benefit both patients and the people who care for them.
