Govt Services Day Held on Charlottesville's Downtown Mall
Government Services Day set up on the downtown mall
Dozens of police officers and firefighters are on Charlottesville's downtown mall Thursday afternoon – but it's not for an emergency, it's the city's Government Services Day.
Government Services Day gives the community a chance to come out and meet the people working for the city. It's especially great for kids - they get a chance to know police officers and firefighters and learn how they can help them in case of an emergency.
The police department is on hand to give a first-hand look at the equipment they use.
"We have our forensic set up. The individuals from our forensic unit were kind enough to bring the van out, bring some different displays on what it is that they do, how they work crime scenes, what their job entails," said Sgt. Steve Knick with the Charlottesville Police Department.
The free event runs until 2 p.m.
The Charlottesville Fire Department also wants to remind people living in the city that they can be a part of its free smoke alarm program. The alarms improve your chance of escaping a house fire by 66 percent. You can call the free smoke alarm hotline at 434-970-3245 to get one.
