An Albemarle County elementary school ranks as one of the best in the nation.
Meriwether Lewis Elementary School earned National Blue Ribbon status for its student test scores and unique approach to learning. The school near Ivy is one of seven public schools in Virginia to earn that recognition this year, and 236 schools nationwide.
The school of just more than 400 students averaged a 94 percent pass rate on English SOL tests over a three year period. Math, history, and science pass rates ranged from 90 to 96 percent.
The school ditched the traditional classroom style of teaching to focus on "the four Cs": creativity, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking.
"The classroom looks a little bit different. It's centered around students and meeting students' needs. So, instead of seeing students passively sitting around and listening to lectures, we have students actively engaging in work and doing and creating," said Kimberly Cousins, the school's principal.
The state has recognized Meriwether Lewis several years for its success, but this is the first time the school earned Blue Ribbon status.
Cousins, along with a teacher, will travel to Washington, D.C. in November to accept the award. The two are planning a big party for the school family when they get back.
