VA Jobless Rate Increases Slightly in August

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Employment Commission says the state's jobless rate increased for the fourth month in a row in August.

The state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.8 percent in August. That's up from 5.7 percent in June, and down from 5.9 percent a year ago.

Virginia's unemployment rate had been trending down since joblessness peaked at 7.4 percent from December 2009 until March 2010.

Officials say the labor market contracted in August as employment fell and the number of those seeking work increased.

The Labor Department says the national unemployment rate was 7.3 percent in August. Rates rose in 18 U.S. states, fell in 17 state states and were unchanged in 15.
