Rt. 649 in Albemarle to Close for Removal of Storm Debris

Virginia Department of Transportation Press Release

VDOT will use heavy equipment to remove storm debris from Rivanna River bridge pier

CULPEPER – Route 649 (Proffit Road) in Albemarle County will be closed to through traffic at the Rivanna River bridge next week to allow removal of storm debris that has lodged against the bridge pier.

The bridge, located approximately 0.6 mile west of Route 20 (Stony Point Road), will be closed beginning Monday morning and will reopen on Wednesday. Signs will be posted to detour motorists from Route 20 to Route 600 (Watts Passage Road) to Route 29 (Seminole Trail) and reverse. Barricades will block Route 649 at Quarles Road to the west and Route 20 to the east of the bridge. Access to state roads and private entrances on both sides of the bridge will be maintained during the closure.

The bridge will remain closed overnight Monday and Tuesday since heavy equipment must be positioned near the bridge to remove the debris, which was washed downstream and against the bridge during this summer's heavy rains. The large trees and other material that have accumulated on the upstream side of the pier makes the bridge and approaches more vulnerable to flooding when the water in the Rivanna River rises during future storms.
