Barracks Shops Open Late after Smoke, Carbon Monoxide Buildup
Fire crews respond to reports of smoke at Barracks Road Shopping Center
Some stores in the Barracks Road Shopping Center opened late Wednesday after construction caused some problems.
Shortly before 9 a.m., the Charlottesville Fire Department responded to a call about smoke at the Hair Cuttery in the shopping center. Fire crews say construction in that island of businesses caused the smell of smoke and a buildup of carbon monoxide.
Some store employees had to wait outside while their business was aired out.
"What happened is the fire units got on scene. Detecting the levels which were above normal readings in these stores and we had to go ahead and ventilate," said Richard Jones, public information officer for the Charlottesville Fire Department.
A store employee had minor difficulty breathing and was transported to the hospital.
