Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A one-day enforcement blitz by Virginia State Police resulted in more than 1,000 citations for speeding and reckless driving.

The haul was amassed along Virginia's interstates - 81, 95, 85 and 64 - on Saturday. The effort was called "Operation Air, Land and Speed," and it encompassed 870 miles of interstate highway.

Besides the 1,008 speeders and 255 reckless drivers, the traffic safety campaign also resulted in 62 citations for failing to buckle up and nine felony drug arrests.

State police say the saturation enforcement is intended to reinforce safe driving behaviors.
