Students, Principals Plant Blueberry Bushes in School Garden to Celebrate Grants

Posted: Updated:

A group of Charlottesville students and administrators worked in a school garden Friday to celebrate some new grants. Students worked with the principals of Johnson, Venable, and Clark elementary schools to plant three blueberry bushes.

The shrubs symbolized three $2,000 grants - one for each school - awarded to the city school yard garden from the Whole Kids Foundation to support gardens at the schools.

Johnson Elementary Principal Peter Stern stated, "We've used our garden to connect with our cooking program to buy supplies. I know that at Venable and at Clark, they've done the same thing so it's been really a great thing. It's gotten our community together.  Our parents have been involved helping weed, helping build fences."

You can check out the elementary school gardens on a set of community tours next weekend. Click here for more details.
